Aladdin

Presented by the Auckland Festival '03
St. James Theatre, 22 September-4 October, 2003
Written by Michael Hurst; directed by Michael Hurst

MICHAEL HURST LEADS A CAST OF VERY EXCITED PERFORMERS WHO ARE ALL STANDING BY WITH THEIR BEST ACTING, SINGING AND DANCING READY TO DAZZLE THE MUMS, DADS, BOYS AND GIRLS.

Join ALADDIN, the WIDOW TWANKEY, UNCLE ADENAZER, WISHEE-WASHEE, the PRINCESS SHARON, OMAR THE SHERIFF and several small brown and green things as we blaze like comets across the sky of the East, bringing light, laughter and probably some hyperventilation to families from all over the globe (but mainly Auckland!)

High end children's theatre with all the bells and whistles, this is a wild and frenzied journey into the land of Panto featuring a magic carpet ride, the Dragon Queen of the Yellow Sea, mutant zombies, a genie (of course) and more innuendo than you can shake a stick at.

Reviews and Other Articles on Aladdin
(click on links below for complete articles)

New Zealand Herald:  "Hurst's Aladdin is made by a sorcerer. It's the sort of stuff that makes you believe that carpets can fly - and that theatre can take you on a thrilling and magical ride."

New Zealand Herald (article):  "(Aladdin's) energetic cast had the audience of young children and parents screaming with laughter and excitement."

New Zealand Herald (preview):  "Michael Hurst is on his back, waving his legs in the air and pretending he's synchronised-swimming. The trouble is, he's not very synchronised and his long skirt has fallen, revealing his lily-white legs and black undies. Worse is to come."

Metro Magazine (preview):  "Hurst has assembled a cast of top comics, to prove his belief that children deserve the 'full-on theatricality, full-on acting, the real deal' their parents expect."

Aladdin came in second in the Best Play of the Year category in Metro magazine's annual reader poll (Metro, January 2004).
